Under the stimulation of new challenges, utilizing new technologies and concepts to enhance, transform traditions, and activate new formats will inevitably open up new development space.

Only the LED upstream industry stands out and cannot support a city's industrial economy; a hundred flowers competing can strengthen an industry and form a strong new driving force.


Half month talk reporters found through research that with the rise of silicon based LED technology advantages, the high-end LED industry in Nanchang has ushered in a "wind".


Chasing high-quality "light sources" through "ten years of sharpening a sword"


Neons reflect the river, high-rise buildings compete for the moon, and every night, LED light shows are staged on both sides of the Nanchang River. This is a city with a special affection for "light sources".


In the 1960s and 1970s, Nanchang was one of the three major LED production bases in China, and a considerable number of engineers from coastal LED enterprises came from Nanchang. While enjoying the "low-end manufacturing" dividend of the LED industry in some regions, Nanchang's LED industry has been struggling with independent innovation and technological accumulation.


In 2004, the silicon substrate LED technology of the Jiangfengyi team at Nanchang University broke foreign monopolies, forming a tripartite confrontation between China, Japan, and the United States. In 2012, Nanchang achieved mass production of high-power LED chips on silicon substrates. This technology won the first prize of the the State Technological Innovation Award in 2015.


Unlike sapphire based LED chips, silicon based LED chips have the characteristics of good heat dissipation, high reliability, strong light directionality, and excellent light quality. They have a clear advantage in the high-end lighting market and are an important way out for the supply side reform of the LED industry.


The high-end LED industry ushers in a window period of "secondary entrepreneurship"


According to the development law of the LED industry, the layout ratio of LED industry chain enterprises is 1:4:20. Nanchang has strong strength in the upstream chip link, but the number of middle and downstream enterprises has not reached the layout ratio. At the same time, the upstream and downstream input-output ratio is more severe than the inverted one, earning 2 yuan. The upstream needs to invest 10 yuan, while the downstream only needs to invest 1 yuan.


In the past, insufficient supporting facilities led to weak cost control and quick response capabilities. Compared to a coastal LED enterprise that started at the same time, although our scale is not as theirs, our chip price is twice that


Nowadays, with technological advantages, the LED industry in Nanchang is gradually entering a window period of "secondary entrepreneurship". On the one hand, Nanchang has the core technology of the LED industry, which can produce imported substitute products in the high-end lighting market. On the other hand, the labor cost is relatively low, and with strong policy support, some coastal enterprises have started to actively connect with us. "Wang Min believes.


Seize the opportunity to move from '10' to '100'


The solution from 0 to 1 is the technical route problem, and the completion mark is the success of the product pilot test, which is a difficult process. From 1 to 10, it is the optimization of technology and the solution of product economy, forming the problem of large-scale production, which is also difficult. We took six or seven years. "Wang Min said that currently, the LED industry in Nanchang is in the stage of moving from 10 to 100, which is a large-scale stage.


In 2016, Nanchang Optics Valley Group and Jingneng Optoelectronics jointly launched the Global LED Business Partner Program in collaboration with relevant government departments and industry associations. At the same time, we will integrate resources to establish a silicon substrate optoelectronic innovation center for middle and downstream enterprises, build investment platform groups at different levels and stages, and create flexible production and manufacturing lines.


After efforts, more than 20 top ranked companies and supporting manufacturers in segmented markets, including the United States, South Korea, and other countries and regions, have intention to settle in Nanchang and form a supporting system with silicon substrate LED technology.


In terms of technology, in addition to silicon substrate blue light, Nanchang has made breakthroughs in both silicon substrate yellow light and green light LEDs, with electro-optical power conversion efficiency of 21.5% and 40%, respectively, ranking among the world's leading levels. The next generation LED lighting technology based on five primary color synthesis has also reached a practical level. In addition, Nanchang continues to expand the research and development direction of LED in fields such as optical communication, aquaculture, and health.


The Secretary of the Nanchang Municipal Party Committee stated that the new business format is an important breakthrough for the development and upgrading of the central and western regions. At present, Nanchang will seize the opportunity to embrace new business formats and develop a new economy.
